Alleged gameplay footage from Avalanche Studios' cancelled Iron Man game has recently emerged online. In the early 2010s, the developer known for Just Cause and Mad Max was working on an Iron Man title, though it was never officially announced. Co-founder Christofer Sundberg confirmed its development and cancellation during a 2022 interview. Now, gameplay clips have surfaced on Reddit, reportedly obtained from a PS3 developer kit.

The footage shows the game in a very rough state, with Iron Man flying through a vast environment, engaging jets, and attacking various installations. One extended video seems to be an unfinished E3 demo, featuring Iron Man in hand-to-hand combat with soldiers, using a heavy, Arkham-style combat system. Naturally, he also uses his repulsors, missiles, and other gadgets to eliminate targets.

A standout feature is the semi-destructible environments. Iron Man can throw enemies through walls, create shortcuts by tearing through structures, and wreck buildings around him. However, the build is too early to distinguish itself significantly from SEGA's MCU Iron Man games, though it shows promise. Given the fun gameplay of Mad Max and the sandbox nature of Just Cause, Avalanche could have created an excellent Iron Man game.

There is still hope for fans, as EA Motive is currently developing a new Iron Man game, though details remain scarce. The project began in 2022, and there have been no updates since. EA also cancelled a Black Panther game last year, but Iron Man remains in development despite fears it might suffer the same fate. With four years having passed since the announcement, hopefully we'll hear something soon.
