Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Devs Tell Fans to 'Keep the Receipts' as They Pledge Grounded Cosmetics

Developers at Activision and Infinity Ward have urged Call of Duty fans to "keep the receipts" after promising to keep cosmetics in Modern Warfare 4 grounded and authentic. The pledge came via an X/Twitter post shortly after the game's grand reveal earlier this week, following years of player pleas for the franchise to ditch goofy skins and outlandish collaborations that clash with its gritty aesthetic.

"Every aspect of Modern Warfare 4 is anchored in the game's narrative," Infinity Ward's initial post stated. "Every feature, every decision needs to feel authentic to what Modern Warfare is, and that includes cosmetics and collabs. We're committed to keeping it grounded and transparent, and we want to hear from you on what you'd like to see in our game."

As Fortnite thrived with wild crossovers, Call of Duty followed suit. The Activision shooter had dabbled in celebrity collabs before, but the infamous Nicki Minaj skin in Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone turned many fans against the strategy. Since then, the publisher doubled down with packs like a shark skin, a Seth Rogen skin, and a Dave Chappelle bundle. Even Black Ops 6 launched with Nuketown mannequin skins in late 2025, while Black Ops 7 developers said they would monitor feedback on silly cosmetics. Despite debates about carrying forward all skins, Infinity Ward is telling players not to worry about Modern Warfare 4.

After one fan replied to the studio's post, threatening to "throw it at their faces" if they backtracked, the official Call of Duty Studio Community Teams account made a firm promise: "No Lady Gaga. No Omni-Man. No Teletubbies. No SpongeBob. Keep the receipts."

This marks the most definitive stance the Call of Duty team has ever taken on the issue. While some players remain skeptical that collaborations might creep into Modern Warfare 4 before its launch later this year, they can at least hold onto their receipts for now. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to release on October 23, 2026, for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
