Roblox has seen a sharp decline in player numbers and in-game spending from last summer's peak, when the platform was home to viral sensations like Grow a Garden and Steal the Brainrot. While these games still exist—there's even a Grow a Garden 2 now—their popularity has waned, and many young players have moved on. Roblox itself acknowledges it's trying to reshape the platform for a more sustainable, quality-focused future.
The company has also introduced stricter safety measures over the past few years, including age verification for many communication features, which has likely added friction to the user experience.
After a massive surge in players last summer, Roblox's user count has been sliding since the start of 2026. Officially, daily active users now stand at 123 million, down from a peak of 152 million last year.
In-game spending has also dropped, which Roblox attributes to its shift toward recommending higher-quality games that prioritize long-term retention over quick monetization. The company's stock price has plummeted 70% from its peak, erasing tens of billions in market value.
"It's still early, but our data shows a positive lift in quality, stickier engagement games," CEO Dave Baszucki told investors, offering an optimistic view. "The benefits of higher retention, we believe, outweigh the near-term impacts we're seeing as improved retention and engagement compound into future growth."
CFO Naveen K. Chopra admitted, "Monetization as measured in bookings per hour was below our forecast, particularly with under-13 cohorts," noting this was the main factor behind the revenue decline. "We attribute the unforeseen monetization shortfall to a greater-than-expected shift of engagement from high-monetizing 2025 vintage viral games to a combination of new and evergreen experiences with lower hourly monetization."
Chopra also warned of "tough comparisons" for the rest of 2026, projecting a 14-18% revenue drop in the next quarter and declining to provide a forecast for the final quarter.
"Roblox had a terrible second quarter across virtually every engagement and payment metric," said Matthew Dolgin, senior equity analyst at Morningstar. "Everything took a step backwards this quarter, and growth is now in question."
Despite its push for better experiences, Roblox just launched Build, an AI creation tool that lets users turn text prompts into basic games directly in the mobile app.
