Sonic the Hedgehog is officially entering the world of Fortnite as part of the battle royale's upcoming gaming-themed season.

Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, titled 'Override', is set to feature collaborations with several iconic video game franchises, including Tetris, Kingdom Hearts, and Persona.

Today, we got our first look at the gameplay through a clip shared by the official Sonic the Hedgehog social media account. The footage showcases an area inspired by Sonic's iconic Green Hill Zone, with Peely the banana dashing through it in true Sonic style. It's likely that a new Sonic-themed movement item will be introduced, granting players super speed.

Eagle-eyed Fortnite fans will notice that the teaser begins with the logo of the Imagined Order (IO), the game's original antagonists led by Geno, Fortnite's overarching villain who now plays a crucial role in the storyline (voiced by Ben Starr of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33). The implication is that the IO is hacking reality, inserting video game characters into Fortnite's universe for reasons that remain unclear.

Fortnite is currently wrapping up its highly enjoyable Runners season, which focused on collecting Pokémon-like Sprites. These little creatures have become so popular that Epic Games has confirmed the mechanic will continue, with a new generation of Sprites on the way. Additionally, all Sprites collected this season will be saved in a Sprite Garden for each player—which sounds absolutely nothing like a Chao Garden, honest.

The next season of Fortnite is expected to launch on August 19. We'll likely get confirmation of more major video game crossovers in the coming days, and possibly news about Kingdom Hearts at D23 Expo this weekend.
