Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has ordered the GTA 5 modding platform Rage:MP to shut down. The developers announced the news in a forum post on Monday evening, stating that Take-Two formally requested the closure because Rockstar's own modding platform, FiveM, is the only authorized platform for modding GTA, especially for online play.
"We must share an important update about the future of RAGE: MP. Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have made it clear that FiveM is the only authorized platform for GTAV multiplayer modding, as defined in their Platform License Agreement (PLA)," the developers wrote. "In accordance with that policy, and at Take-Two's request, RAGE: MP will begin a structured shutdown process. We are asking all server owners to wind down their operations and migrate to FiveM."
Server owners have until August 31, 2026, to migrate, after which Rage:MP operations will officially cease.
Take-Two and Rockstar have a long history with the GTA modding community. In May 2015, they sparked backlash when they hinted at banning mods from GTA 5, including single-player mods. They later clarified that modding was allowed and even encouraged, but that Rockstar monitored for threats to GTA Online. This created tension among fans, who feared the freedom to mod could be revoked at any time. Later that year, Rockstar tried to shut down FiveM for hosting "an unauthorized alternate multiplayer service that contains code designed to facilitate piracy."
However, things eventually worked out as Rockstar acquired Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM, in August 2023 after a surge in the GTA RP community—a community made possible by modding. This led some to believe that Rockstar acquired the team to properly integrate modding and community servers into GTA 6.
Bethesda helped popularize modding on consoles with Skyrim and Fallout 4, so fans hope GTA 6 will also offer modding tools for consoles. Nothing is confirmed yet, and it may be a while before we hear anything, but it's clear that Rockstar and Take-Two are taking modding more seriously ahead of launch by shutting down Rage:MP.
Meanwhile, GTA 6 was originally expected to release this week but was delayed to November 19. Take-Two is confident it will hit that date and has teased extensive marketing plans starting this summer. While you wait, there's plenty more to read about GTA 6, including Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick's comments on whether GTA 6 needs a Trailer 3, his thoughts on the current console install base (GTA 6 won't launch on PC), and how the game is actually delayed around 18 months, not a year.
