The Outer Worlds Finally Gets Grenades, Nearly 7 Years After Launch

Surprise! The Outer Worlds is finally getting grenades, nearly seven years after its initial release—and almost six months after its sequel launched. Developer Obsidian confirmed in a detailed Steam post (its first since June 2023) that it will be pushing a couple of updates to the game, culminating in the addition of explosive throwables, which are already a staple in The Outer Worlds 2, later this month.

Along with some tweaks to the Store pages, the studio has rolled out a modest initial update to test the pipeline and fix a few existing issues. A larger patch will follow, bringing performance fixes, lighting changes, a host of other quest and gameplay fixes, and—finally—grenades.

This second patch will also trigger store changes. Starting May 27, the base game edition of The Outer Worlds will be delisted, leaving only the Spacer's Choice Edition. Existing owners of the base edition won't be affected—Obsidian assures it "won't be going anywhere"—but anyone looking to buy the game on current-gen systems after May 27 will only get the newer edition.

To sweeten the deal, players with the vanilla game on PC (Steam, GOG, or EGS), PS5, or Xbox Series X/S can upgrade to the Spacer's Choice Edition for free between now and May 27.

Still playing on a legacy system? Obsidian hasn't forgotten you, but the upgrade works a bit differently. To upgrade from the base game to Spacer's Choice Edition on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, you'll need to own the base game and both DLCs for The Outer Worlds. If you do, you won't need to use the previously paid upgrade path. The base game and DLCs are also getting price adjustments to $24.99 and $14.99, respectively, on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

This surprise update comes after The Outer Worlds 2 underperformed and Obsidian confirmed it has no plans for a third game in the series. Avowed, the studio's other RPG released last year, also missed its targets—but Obsidian reportedly still has plans for more content set in the world of Eora, the same setting as Pillars of Eternity.

On a brighter note, Grounded 2—another 2025 launch—was a hit. However, it had the shortest and cheapest development period by far, taking just over two years to reach early access, compared to over six years for both Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2.
