Bethesda's Todd Howard has confirmed that the upcoming Starfield update won't be a massive '2.0' transformation, tempering expectations for those hoping for a complete overhaul. Late last year, some fans got an early look at improvements to the sci-fi RPG, with one expressing excitement and another noting the changes are modest, comparing it to the smaller scale of Cyberpunk's updates rather than its major 2.0 revamp.
In an interview with Kinda Funny, transcribed by Kotaku, Howard stated, 'We’ve been working on a lot of Starfield content and will discuss it soon. We’re entering a phase to properly showcase what’s coming—updates that enhance the game in a meta way, like new uses for outer space, which we think fans will love.' However, he candidly added, 'If Starfield didn’t grab you initially or you found it boring, this update likely won’t change that fundamentally.'
While Howard didn't specify exact dates, he hinted at more details coming 'soonish.' This follows reports from August that Bethesda delayed Starfield's second expansion due to weak sales of the first expansion, Shattered Space, which launched in September 2024 with a 'Mostly Negative' Steam rating. Howard had previously mentioned annual expansions, but the delay may be tied to plans for a PS5 release, potentially aligning the second expansion with a multiplatform rollout. Earlier this month, a Microsoft report suggested new content is imminent, fueling rumors about a PlayStation 5 version announcement soon.
