Fans are praising the final update for Assassin's Creed Shadows, claiming it finally fixes plot holes and delivers a proper ending, while Ubisoft acknowledges that some aspects of the base game fell short. The update, called Black Tides, adds new missions for free and serves as the game's concluding chapter. Shadows, set in feudal Japan, launched last year to mostly positive reviews for its visuals and world, but long-time fans were disappointed by certain story elements and an abrupt ending that seemed to set up expansions that never materialized. Now, over a year later, Ubisoft has wrapped up the game's narrative, and fans are pleased with the effort. Without spoiling too much, the update introduces a new Templar threat, delves into the mysterious Isu race, and includes Easter eggs and references to other series entries, including a direct link to Black Flag—setting up the upcoming remake, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. Ubisoft intentionally downplayed the Isu in Shadows to avoid alienating new players, but they now recognize that remaining fans crave more lore. Associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois stated, 'We acknowledge some story elements from the main game that the community didn't resonate with as much as we hoped. So we're taking that feedback and addressing it in this final chapter.' He added that Black Tides opens the door to more Templar-focused content. On Reddit, fans have praised the update for addressing long-standing lore issues, including the Japanese origins of the Assassin brotherhood, and for the challenging final boss. Lemay-Comtois concluded, 'I know these characters and the Japanese setting have much more left in the tank... but for now, this is the end of their story.'
