The Witcher 3's 'Songs of the Past' Expansion Adds More Gwent, and Fans Are Thrilled

CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that the upcoming 'Songs of the Past' expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will include additional Gwent content, much to the delight of card game enthusiasts.

When The Witcher 3 launched in 2015, it received widespread acclaim. While Doug Cockle's gruff portrayal of Geralt brought the story to life, and the RPG mechanics appealed to fantasy fans of all stripes, many players found themselves returning time and again for Gwent. The in-game card game, which pits players against each other in fast-paced duels requiring strategy, bluffing, and careful deck building, was a standout feature.

CD Projekt Red's official description of Gwent reads: 'In Gwent, gamers clash with friends in fast-paced duels that combine skill-based play with bluffing, and careful deck construction. The game is played over a best-of-three series of rounds, as players unleash their hand by slinging spells and diverse units with special abilities, and use clever tricks to deceive their opponents.'

Gwent first appeared in The Witcher 3 before becoming a standalone game in 2017 and a physical tabletop version in 2025. Many have tried to replicate its success, but few have matched its longevity. That's likely why it's making a comeback in the 'Songs of the Past' expansion, set to release in 2027.

Marcin Łukaszewski, CD Projekt Red's community and social media manager, teased the return of this beloved side activity when responding to a player on X/Twitter. When a fan expressed hope that the expansion would include more Gwent, Łukaszewski simply replied: 'Confirmed!'

It's been over a decade since The Witcher 3's last expansion, Blood and Wine, which released in 2016. By the time 'Songs of the Past' arrives next year, the wait will have been even longer. CD Projekt Red has hinted that this is a full-fledged story expansion, possibly serving as a prologue to the events of the main game. While it won't be solely focused on Gwent, fans who have been eager for another round of card battles have plenty of reason to be excited.

Fans have already taken to social media to express their enthusiasm, with one tweet reading: 'Well, I hope whatever the main plot of Songs of the Past is, it's not urgent. Because Geralt's got more Gwenting to do, baby!' Another simply said: 'Let's gooooooo!!!!!!!'

IGN originally gave The Witcher 3 a 9.3/10 rating, calling it 'Amazing' and noting that it 'ends Geralt's story on a high note.' CD Projekt Red is far from done with the franchise, as they recently confirmed that The Witcher 4 is on track for a 2028 release.

As for 'Songs of the Past,' we won't have to wait long for more details. The developers plan to share additional information during gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live, which is less than 24 hours away.
