Andrzej Sapkowski Aims to Finish Next Witcher Novel by 2027, Teases 'Sky's the Limit' for Future Prequels

Andrzej Sapkowski, the mastermind behind The Witcher series, has confirmed that he's already deep into writing Geralt's next adventure and hinted to IGN that 'the sky is the limit' for potential prequels.

Sapkowski has revealed that his next Witcher novel is in progress, with the Polish author setting his sights on a 2027 completion date.

According to Redanian Intelligence, during a panel at the Copernicon convention in Torun, Poland, Sapkowski shared that he has outlined the next book and is actively writing it. While plot details are still under wraps, Sapkowski dismissed a fan's question about whether he'd write a novel focused on other characters, like Yennefer of Vengerberg, confirming that the story will once again center on Geralt of Rivia.

This aligns with what Sapkowski told us in a recent interview alongside his English translator, David French. When asked if there was room to further explore Geralt's early years after the prequel Crossroads of Ravens, which follows an 18-year-old Geralt, Sapkowski gave a characteristically sharp reply:

'Room? Sky is the limit.'

While Sapkowski hasn't definitively confirmed that this next novel is another Geralt prequel, it's not a stretch to assume that's what we'll get.

Additionally, Sapkowski told IGN he's open to returning to the short story format that launched his Witcher novels with The Last Wish.

'It is not an easy thing to create a good short story,' Sapkowski explained. 'This is much more difficult than writing a novel... But if one succeeds, it is proof of writing mastery.'

'It is not easy to nicely and logically lead that straight line from point A to point B and that with a word count of less than some 8,000 words... Now, answering your question: yes, I am considering writing more short stories.'

If Sapkowski meets his target of finishing by the end of 2027, Polish readers can likely expect the book on shelves in late 2027 or 2028, with English translations probably following in late 2028 or 2029. If achieved, a four-year gap between Crossroads of Ravens and his next work would be Sapkowski's quickest output since The Lady of the Lake in 1999.

Sapkowski has also said he is 'open to suggestions' for any unconventional adaptations of The Witcher, humorously noting that there have already been two musicals.

The Witcher franchise isn't slowing down either, starting with a series of full-cast audiobook dramas set to release throughout 2026 and 2027. That begins with Crossroads of Ravens, the prequel mentioned earlier, and will be followed by The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny in November.
