Bethesda has paid tribute to Sir Patrick Stewart following his passing, honoring his memorable role in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The news of Stewart's death at age 86 broke earlier today, prompting an outpouring of grief and appreciation from fans and colleagues alike. Social media has been flooded with tributes from longtime collaborators such as William Shatner, Kevin Feige, and Hugh Jackman, who shared fond memories of working with the beloved actor.
Bethesda joined in the remembrance, calling Stewart an "inspiration to us all." In Oblivion, Stewart portrayed Emperor Uriel Septim VII, a character who meets his end early in the game. Despite limited screen time, his performance set the tone for the entire adventure, introducing players to the world of Cyrodiil and the threats they would face.

Although Stewart appeared for less than 10 minutes, Bethesda had prepared an extensive document—reportedly around 90 pages—detailing the Emperor's history and background. They worried it might be excessive, but executive producer Todd Howard recalled that Stewart was delighted by the depth and eager to take on the role. In a behind-the-scenes documentary about Oblivion's development, the team gathered to listen to Stewart's first recordings, marveling at how he elevated lines they feared might sound cheesy. One developer was such a fan that he kept a photo of Stewart in his wallet.
Fans also shared their appreciation online, noting that Stewart was the perfect choice to welcome players to Oblivion. "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion would not have hit the same without the iconic introduction and prologue led by Patrick Stewart as Emperor Uriel Septim VII," one fan wrote. Another added, "Despite only being in the game for the opening and tutorial, Patrick Stewart gave the intro of Oblivion immense gravitas that will never be forgotten and could not have been achieved by anyone else."
Beyond Oblivion, Stewart had a notable career in video games, reprising his Star Trek and X-Men roles and delivering impactful voice work in titles like Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. His narration in that game remains iconic.
Stewart's family has asked fans and friends to consider donating to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer's Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer's Foundation of America Caregiver Resources.
