Even in 2026, Jeff Kaplan, the former director of Blizzard's hero shooter Overwatch, finds himself addressing questions about the alleged "nerf" to Tracer's rear end.
Rewind to 2016, when Overwatch was in its beta phase and the gaming landscape felt more straightforward. Amid the hype for Blizzard's new franchise, one particular controversy dampened some fans' enthusiasm: the studio's choice to modify a victory pose that prominently featured protagonist Tracer's backside.
In March 2016, Blizzard decided to tweak Tracer's "Over the Shoulder" victory pose after players criticized its suggestive nature. Kaplan later expressed agreement with the feedback, noting that the original pose risked reducing Tracer to a generic female sex symbol. Following discussions, Kaplan confirmed the change, and within a week, a revised version offering a more side-on perspective was implemented.
Unsurprisingly, this adjustment sparked backlash from another segment of players who accused Blizzard of yielding to "SJW" demands. Fast forward ten years, with Kaplan no longer at Blizzard and focused on promoting his upcoming cowboy survival shooter, The Legend of California, the topic still lingers.
During a stream of his new game, Kaplan read a viewer's question: "Why did you guys nerf Tracer's butt?" He responded, "Uh, we actually didn't nerf Tracer's butt. It stayed exactly the same," adding with a chuckle, "That was a good riposte I just had."
As Kaplan drums up interest for his latest project, he's been making waves in the gaming community. Recently, he gave a candid interview explaining his departure from Blizzard after nearly two decades, citing intense financial pressures from Activision Blizzard that threatened job security for his team. He also offered blunt advice to critics: "If a game comes out, and you don't want to play it, and you've never played it? Shut the f*** up. No one cares."
Meanwhile, Overwatch continues to evolve based on player input regarding character design. Just this week, Blizzard unveiled a refreshed appearance for hero Anran, moving away from a "baby face" look that had drawn criticism from both fans and the character's voice actress.
