Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has introduced new disclaimers for content that deviates from the game's typical realistic tone and aesthetic.
Earlier today, Modern Warfare 4 added a new mode called Possession. This Halloween-themed mode lets players 'possess' the last person they killed, enabling them to teleport to that player's last location and take their loadout. It's a fascinating concept for a mode, but it doesn't fit the game's grounded, gritty, and realistic style. As a result, Infinity Ward has added a 'non-milsim content' disclaimer tag to the playlist before players search for a match.
The new Possession multiplayer mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 comes with a warning: 'Warning: Non-MilSim Content.' This mode is a Halloween-themed multiplayer experience.
This move comes after years of player frustration that Call of Duty's multiplayer often abandons the darker, more serious tone set by the campaign and seasonal lore. The franchise has introduced skins allowing players to play as Nicki Minaj, Beavis and Butthead, and Seth Rogen, which has compromised the game's identity. Infinity Ward had already promised to tone things down with Modern Warfare 4 and avoid absurd, over-the-top skins, but this new disclaimer suggests that some content may still push the boundaries for hardcore fans.
Of course, one could argue that Call of Duty isn't realistic and isn't truly a 'milsim' game, given its fast pace, ridiculous movement, Wolverine-style health regeneration, and more. It's more about aesthetics than gameplay style. Nevertheless, some players value the immersion of realistic military characters and modes and don't want that disrupted.
It's unclear what Infinity Ward's plans are for future bundles, but the team recently outlined its plans for Modern Warfare 4 Season 1, much of which seems to retain the grounded tone fans desire. Of course, we'll have to wait and see what's in store for the new year, which is often when we start to see more crossover content.
