Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Warzone will be shutting down on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, coinciding with the release of Modern Warfare 4, which will not support last-gen consoles.
Modern Warfare 4, launching in October, will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, with no PS4 or Xbox One version. (For a full rundown of everything revealed so far, check out our Modern Warfare 4 coverage.)
Season 1 of Modern Warfare 4 begins shortly after the game's October 23 release, and Warzone will integrate with Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression.
The key takeaway: Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will become unplayable at the start of Season 1. Starting June 4, new downloads of the battle royale will be blocked on those consoles, though existing players can still play until Season 1 launches. Additionally, some Call of Duty microtransactions will no longer be available on these platforms.
On June 25, the in-game store for Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will be removed. Activision confirmed that players can still progress through free Battle Pass tiers and unlock new weapons in remaining Black Ops 7 seasons.
The PS4 and Xbox One are nearly 13 years old, and with Call of Duty transitioning to current-gen only for Modern Warfare 4, it was likely inevitable for Warzone to follow suit, given its shared content. This marks the end of an era, especially considering Warzone's massive launch in early 2020, before the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S arrived.
