CD Projekt has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold over 40 million copies, marking an increase of 5 million since the last reported figure of 35 million in November. This achievement represents one of the most remarkable turnarounds in gaming history, given the game's disastrous 2020 launch, which led to Sony removing it from the PlayStation Store due to its poor state, especially on consoles. The studio has since worked hard to improve the game and rebuild trust with fans. Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski acknowledged that while the game has recovered significantly, he believes a 'full redemption arc' has yet to be completed. In a social media post on July 3, Nowakowski stated, '40 million copies sold shows the incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD Projekt does best — creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years. It's a great foundation for our upcoming projects in this universe, including the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime arriving this fall.' This refers not only to the anime sequel but also to Cyberpunk 2, which 163 people were working on as of late April. While details about Cyberpunk 2 are scarce, creator Mike Pondsmith teased during the Digital Dragons 2025 conference that the sequel will feature a brand new city in addition to Night City, describing it as 'like Chicago gone wrong.' Pondsmith also mentioned he has reviewed scripts and visited CD Projekt to see the work in progress. Additionally, Keanu Reeves expressed interest in reprising his role as Johnny Silverhand in the sequel, and Pondsmith confirmed he has found a way to make it work, telling Reeves to 'contact me.' However, Cyberpunk 2 is likely still years away, as CD Projekt is currently focused on The Witcher 4, and Nowakowski suggested the sequel won't release until at least 2030. For comparison, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold over 65 million copies and is getting a new expansion next year.
