Cliff Bleszinski, the renowned video game designer behind Gears of War, has revealed his battle with alcoholism and how it impacted his career, including the downfall of his studio Boss Key Productions and its hero shooter LawBreakers. Bleszinski, now 51, was a key designer at Epic Games, working on titles like Jazz Jackrabbit, Unreal Tournament, and the Gears of War series. He left Epic to found Boss Key Productions, but the studio's games—LawBreakers and Radical Heights—failed, leading to its closure.

In a candid interview with 80 Level, Bleszinski admitted he was mostly responsible for Boss Key's collapse. "I was a functioning alcoholic," he said. "Then I became a non-functioning alcoholic." He noted that he has now been sober for four months and is considering a return to game development.

The interview covers a range of topics, including LawBreakers' failure ("LawBreakers tripped so Concord could faceplant"), abandoned game ideas, and the death of his dog. Bleszinski acknowledged that his ego contributed to his mistakes, such as refusing to co-found Boss Key with former Gears of War developer Rod Fergusson.

Bleszinski's alcohol issues began in 2003 during Unreal Tournament's development and continued through the Gears of War trilogy. "The Gears of War trilogy was largely developed hungover by me," he said. "I was, at that point, a functioning alcoholic." He described the party culture at industry events like GDC and E3, where his high tolerance allowed him to gather confidential information while others drank moderately—a "superpower" that eventually turned into a problem.

In March, Bleszinski suffered a seizure and was hospitalized. He quit drinking afterward and now sees a therapist. "Eventually, my body was like 'F**k you,' and I realized this is me hitting a wall and it's time to give this up after 25 years of partying," he said.

Despite his struggles, Bleszinski appears to be in a better place and is contemplating a return to game development. However, he made it clear he has no plans to work on another PvP game, stating, "Good luck to anyone in that space."
