EA Sports is developing a new open-world football game, seemingly separate from its Madden and College Football franchises. In a recent letter outlining EA's future plans, the company confirmed it is working on a brand-new Fight Night game, the first boxing title from EA in over a decade. However, the bigger surprise is that EA is also developing an open-world football game codenamed 'Project Gridiron.'

"We have two new projects in development you’ll hear about over the next few months, including a brand-new, social-first open-world experience for our American Football team that we call 'Project Gridiron,'" EA stated. "And we are also in pre-production to bring back a beloved, fan-favorite in Fight Night, leveraging capabilities from our simulation fighting team."

It remains unclear whether Project Gridiron will feature a narrative or if its open world will be a shared online universe, similar to NBA 2K. Could it be a more mature and gritty football game, akin to what Fight Night Champion did for boxing? It's too early to tell. Madden briefly experimented with narrative-driven campaigns in the mid-to-late 2010s with moderate success, but eventually shifted focus back to a broader career mode for players seeking a progressive single-player experience.

While a new College Football game is expected to release next year according to previous statements from EA Sports, the existence of Project Gridiron raises questions about whether Madden might be sidelined in favor of this new title. After all, does anyone have the time, money, or interest in three EA-developed football games in a single year? It's also possible that Project Gridiron represents a complete transformation of the Madden experience, but it sounds like something entirely new. Fortunately, we won't have to wait long, as EA noted we will learn more about the game in the "next few months." Perhaps we'll hear about it during The Game Awards or sometime in early 2027, but only time will tell.

A recent report also highlighted internal concerns about the future of College Football, as rising costs for NIL rights, along with other licensing and development expenses, are creating friction. The series' sales have reportedly declined year over year, leading some developers to worry that the franchise's return may be short-lived. Perhaps Project Gridiron could replace College Football in the future.
