EA appears to have quietly removed a batch of Mass Effect content from Battlefield 6, just days after shutting down series developer BioWare. Players first noticed the incoming Mass Effect collaboration when themed items were added to cosmetic menus with the launch of Season 5 earlier this month. As fans captured and shared on social media, the previously locked crossover collection included sci-fi weaponry, a Normandy ship weapon charm, and other N7-branded items.
With a Dead Space crossover added at the same time and N7 Day approaching, fans suspected the new content would be available soon. Some even speculated that the surprise drop meant EA might have plans to deliver an update on its long-in-development Mass Effect 5. However, the controversial publisher announced just days ago that it had no plans for BioWare or Mass Effect at all.
The remaining team at the studio was abruptly laid off when BioWare was shut down two days ago, on October 21, 2026. The move rocked the industry and left fans and outsiders bewildered, as EA also confirmed Mass Effect 5 was canceled, throwing the series' gaming presence into an indefinite hiatus. Perhaps more confusing was the existence of that Mass Effect content in Battlefield 6, but it didn't take long for DICE and the rest of BioWare's former sister studios at Battlefield Studios to pull the collaboration entirely.
Fans quickly discovered that EA had quietly removed any mention of the Mass Effect cosmetics in the wake of BioWare's shutdown. Although the move has further divided a community already disheartened by EA leadership, it's easy to see why the company swiftly pulled the plug. Continuing to push Mass Effect content on fans mourning the demise of the once-beloved sci-fi RPG franchise would certainly only sour the already-bitter taste in players' mouths. With likely no plans for any of the franchise's usual N7 Day festivities on November 7, a relatively small drop of cosmetics would have only added insult to injury.
It would have been an especially painful blow for fans of EA's past, considering the publisher already caught flak for its even more prominent Dead Space crossover. Featuring both weapons and even a new mode, Battlefield 6's collab arrived at a time when Dead Space's future as a living, breathing game franchise also remained a mystery. Although franchise followers seem to have enjoyed the mode, many have also criticized EA for doing the minimum with some of its most critically acclaimed IP.
Still, there are those who think the Mass Effect cosmetics, which seem to have been finished and ready for launch at any moment, would have still been nice to have. After all, the franchise isn't completely without a plan, at least for now. Amazon's Prime Video, for example, confirmed to IGN that its previously announced Mass Effect TV series was still very much in the works following BioWare's closure. There are also those hoping the IP and even some members of its studio's team of developers could find a new home.
EA was officially acquired by Saudi Arabia's PIF, Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners in August of this year. Some analysts believe the decision to close BioWare was "entirely predictable." For now, BioWare and the Mass Effect game franchise seem to be without a future. In the wake of EA leadership's decision-making, fans quickly launched a petition to save the series and amassed more than 50,000 signatures. A trailer for the now-canceled Mass Effect 5 also quickly leaked online.
