Final Fantasy Fans Think Dirge of Cerberus Remake Is Coming After Gackt's Genesis Cosplay Photo

Final Fantasy enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement, convinced that a Dirge of Cerberus remake might be on the horizon. This speculation was sparked when Gackt, one of Japan's most iconic rockstars, shared a photo of himself dressed as Genesis from Crisis Core on Instagram.

Gackt is well-known for voicing Genesis Rhapsodos in the Japanese versions of both Crisis Core and the hidden ending of Dirge of Cerberus. It's widely known that he helped inspire and even co-designed the character, who has been a fan favorite since his debut nearly two decades ago.

Although Gackt returned to voice Genesis for the Crisis Core remake in 2022, the character has been largely absent since—until now.

On August 6, 2026, Gackt posted an Instagram reel featuring himself in full Genesis cosplay (though calling it 'cosplay' might be a stretch since Gackt is essentially the character). The video is set to his song "Redemption," which fans quickly recognized as the official theme song for Dirge of Cerberus. This has sent the community into a frenzy, with many speculating that a remake of the Vincent Valentine-centric game could be announced soon.

Dirge of Cerberus is one of the few remaining Final Fantasy VII spinoffs that hasn't received an official remake, and it's a title that could definitely benefit from a modern overhaul. While its place in the FF7 universe is beloved, its controls and gameplay feel dated by today's standards, making the prospect of a remake highly appealing.

One eagle-eyed fan, going by 'nibelbound' on X, noticed a pattern in Gackt's Instagram activity that mirrors his posts before the Crisis Core remake announcement. Just four days before Crisis Core Reunion was revealed at Summer Game Fest 2022, Gackt mentioned returning to a studio he hadn't visited in "over ten years" for voice recording sessions.

Of course, a Dirge of Cerberus remake isn't the only theory circulating. Some fans speculate that Genesis might appear in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, which is slated for a showcase at Gamescom 2026.

This isn't far-fetched, as Revelation's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, recently emphasized his commitment to weaving all Final Fantasy VII spinoffs into the game's narrative. In an interview at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival Berlin 2026, he said, "There are a lot of other titles within the VII universe. So, we're talking about Advent Children, we're talking about Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core. And we want to bring all of those in and make sure we're not leaving those out. And then on top of that, once we have all of those in place, we're looking towards the ending. And then the question is, what kind of ending are we going to head for in Revelation that still has those ties? And I think that's something that I really hope players will look forward to finding out."

With Dirge of Cerberus's storyline getting attention in Ever Crisis and subtle references in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, it seems more likely than ever that DoC and Genesis could finally get their long-awaited 'Reunion' with fans. (I'll be here all week, folks.)
