Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that God of War Laufey will be released on a physical disc, suggesting the game is slated for a 2027 launch. The announcement came via a post on the studio's X/Twitter account, addressing fans who were concerned about an all-digital release. In response to a post revealing their presence at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 to discuss the game, the studio reassured fans: "We can confirm God of War Laufey will be available on disc." This one-sentence confirmation has sparked excitement for two reasons. First, it assures a physical release for the Deborah Ann Woll-starring title, especially after Sony announced it would cease production of new physical games starting January 2028. Many players had expressed disappointment over Sony's decision, but they can now rest easy knowing this PlayStation exclusive won't be digital-only. Second, the confirmation hints at a 2027 release window, as disc production for new PlayStation games is set to end in January 2028. Some fans feared God of War Laufey might skip a physical release due to the lack of a confirmed release date or window. Additionally, Rockstar Games recently confirmed that physical copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 would only contain a code in a box. With these factors in mind, the studio's confidence in confirming a physical release now points to a launch before 2027 ends. God of War Laufey was announced during Sony's June 2026 State of Play presentation. This non-prequel story follows Faye/Laufey on a journey through the afterlife, with its reveal showcasing extensive gameplay and story moments. Given the amount of content already shown and rumors of a February or March 2027 launch, the developers' assurance of a physical release makes sense. For now, God of War Laufey has no firm release date. In the meantime, you can check out IGN's exclusive interview with the team, or watch Woll recount the moment she was first told about the game back in 2018.
