Panettiere's father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed to ABC News that she passed away on Sunday, August 16, at the age of 36 in Greenville, South Carolina. The circumstances surrounding her death are still under investigation by local authorities.

"It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," her father said. "She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her – and to the millions who watched her onscreen."

Social media has been flooded with heartfelt messages since the news broke. Fans and colleagues alike have praised Panettiere as a versatile talent whose career spanned film, television, and video games.

Panettiere began acting at a young age, appearing in shows like Aliens in the Family, Unhappily Ever After, and One Life to Live before she turned 10. Many remember her early voice role as Dot in Pixar's A Bug's Life.

Her filmography includes Remember the Titans, Dinosaur, Ice Princess, Bring It On: All or Nothing, and Tiger Cruise. In the gaming world, she is remembered as the voice of Kairi in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. Alyson Stoner, who took over the role in Kingdom Hearts 3, shared a touching tribute online.

In 2011, Panettiere entered the horror genre as Kirby Reed in Scream 4. Her co-star Nico Tortorella expressed his grief on Instagram, saying, "It's your birthday in a few days. The same day as my mom's. This one really hurts. I love you so much, sis. We grew up together in so many ways, fought like siblings, loved like siblings, and somewhere along the way, you just became family. I know you were in so much pain. Fellow Scream co-star Melissa Barrera also paid tribute, writing, "Rest in peace sweet Hayden."

Panettiere reprised her role in Scream 6 in 2023. She also voiced Sam in Until Dawn (2015) and its 2024 remake. Developer Supermassive Games honored her as "one of horror gaming's most iconic final girls."
