Robert Bogue, the actor behind FIB agent Steve Haines in Grand Theft Auto 5, has revealed he auditioned for a staggering 60 roles in GTA 6, only to be completely ignored by Rockstar Games. The news surfaced when X user Burak reached out to Bogue on Instagram, and despite Rockstar's notorious secrecy around GTA 6, Bogue was surprisingly open about his experience.
When asked if he was involved in GTA 6, Bogue confessed he wasn't, and expressed his disappointment. "I'm a little bit down on Rockstar right now," he said. "I had such a great time working with them. I so badly wanted to work on GTA 6. I must've auditioned for over 60 characters. Some were big, some were small. I didn't care. I just wanted to be in it. I didn't get any of them, and they never called me about any of them. I was so disappointed. I thought maybe they have an unofficial policy where they don't reuse actors, because I thought, 'You're gonna say no to me 60 times? Even for a small character?' So, I'm a little frustrated by them. I feel like someone who's in love with a girl and then she just dumped me."
Bogue also mentioned he knows nothing about the game beyond what's publicly known. After his comments went viral, he sent another message through Burak: "I'm sorry to throw Rockstar under the bus publicly about how many auditions I've had, but the truth is the truth. At the end of the day, the actor's life is about rejection. It's just, sometimes you need a victory once in a while."
Bogue has a history with Rockstar, having voiced Red Harlow in Red Dead Revolver, Troy in Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony, and Steve Haines in GTA 5. Rockstar has shown they're open to bringing actors back for different roles if it fits. For instance, Ned Luke, who played Michael in GTA 5, had a small role in Red Dead Redemption 2, though his lines were reportedly cut to avoid distracting players. It's possible Rockstar felt Bogue would stand out too much in GTA 6 or simply wasn't the right fit for any parts.
Bogue's frustration seems to stem from being ghosted without any official rejection. Regardless, it's safe to say we won't see Steve Haines in GTA 6. That might not be surprising, as players can kill him in one of GTA 5's multiple endings, which is widely considered canon.
Bogue's experience isn't unique. Before GTA 5, Rockstar had disputes with actors like Michael Hollick, who voiced Niko Bellic. Hollick felt underpaid, earning only $100,000 for 15 months of work on GTA 4, and was frustrated when the game became a massive hit without him seeing residual profits. This dispute is believed to be why Niko didn't appear in GTA 5, while other characters like Packie, Michelle/Karen, and Brucie did.
Ray Liotta also criticized the pay for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, saying it was subpar compared to his film work. Over time, Rockstar's relationship with actors seems to have improved, with performers like Roger Clark, Ned Luke, and Shawn Fonteno speaking positively about their experiences. Fonteno has noted Rockstar has been kind to him, even without residuals, and both he and Luke have reprised their GTA 5 roles in GTA Online updates, providing them more work in a franchise they love.
