Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to feature a map that dwarfs Rockstar's previous open worlds. Here's a breakdown of how it measures up, according to the developer.

Rockstar Games confirmed to The New York Times and YouTuber TGG that GTA 6's map is three times larger than the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. Further details from TGG reveal it's twice the size of GTA 5, and Vice City itself is double the size of Los Santos from GTA 5. The city and its suburbs are a staggering 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its environs.

If that's not impressive enough, TGG also disclosed that GTA 6 will feature "hundreds" of enterable interiors. In GTA 5, players could access their characters' homes, various shops, and a handful of random buildings like the Los Santos police station, but there were generally few places to explore. GTA Online has added more over time, but they often require loading screens and are quite restrictive.

The extended GTA 6 showcase already displayed a variety of interiors both in and out of missions, promising to make Leonida a much more layered world. Speaking to IGN, Rockstar's Rob Nelson discussed how the team applied lessons from building Red Dead Redemption 2's Wild West and expanded on those ideas for GTA 6.

"With Red Dead Redemption 2, we finally had the team and the tech, and we took the time needed to push the idea of a fully realized, consistent-feeling world further than ever before," Nelson explained. "We used that time to maximize the quality of our open world population, design, and gameplay, so that when you were riding from one place to another, you were constantly distracted and pulled in different directions. You could really get lost as that character in that place. That's when these games feel magical and create a sense of wonder that the world is alive – you get those little shivers of 'What's happening?'

"GTA 6 is a continuation of our team pushing in this direction – doing everything we possibly can to create the largest, deepest, most densely populated, and complex world we have ever built for people to get lost in."
