Pearl Abyss, the developer and publisher behind Crimson Desert, has confirmed that no gameplay footage for the Xbox Series X and S versions will be released before the game's launch on March 19. With the highly anticipated open-world action title just a day away from release, this absence has sparked concerns among Xbox owners about potential performance issues on Microsoft's consoles.
While Pearl Abyss has showcased the game running on PC, and footage for the PlayStation 5 Pro was analyzed by Digital Foundry, with base PS5 gameplay recently appearing on PlayStation Japan's YouTube channel, the Xbox versions remain notably missing from public view. When questioned by IGN about this omission, Pearl Abyss directed attention to the confirmed Crimson Desert specs sheet and mentioned that Xbox review codes have been distributed as requested.
The specs reveal that the Xbox Series S offers performance and quality modes, but lacks a balanced option. In performance mode, it targets 720p resolution at 40 frames per second with raytracing disabled, while quality mode aims for 1080p at 30fps, also without raytracing. In contrast, the Xbox Series X is expected to deliver enhanced performance across all modes, including up to 60fps in performance mode.
According to a launch FAQ, Crimson Desert requires an internet connection for the initial setup and day-one patch to ensure players have the latest version, after which it can be played offline. On the technical front, the game supports FSR 3/4 and DLSS 4/4.5 on PC, upgraded PSSR for PS5 Pro, and FSR 3 for base PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. PC versions also feature AMD FSR Ray Regeneration and Nvidia DLSS Ray Reconstruction, with frame generation technologies like FSR, DLSS, and MetalFX exclusive to PC and Mac platforms, including MetalFX Upscaler, Frame Generation, and Denoiser on Mac.
It's common for developers to withhold footage of specific versions before launch for various reasons, but Crimson Desert's massive pre-release hype has intensified scrutiny. Some have accused Pearl Abyss of concealing the PlayStation and Xbox versions, raising fears of a repeat of the Cyberpunk 2077 situation, where console versions were not shown pre-release and later faced performance issues.
Earlier this month, Pearl Abyss marketing chief Will Powers urged fans to be patient, stating, "We're not hiding anything, and I'm sick of having to repeat myself. I've repeated 100s of times that we'll reveal things ahead of launch to give people adequate time to still preorder the game for themselves. We're saying this openly... Let us cook? Please and thank you. /rant"
