Insomniac Vows to 'Further Refine the Player Experience' for Marvel's Wolverine Based on Feedback

Insomniac Games, the developer behind Marvel's Wolverine, has announced plans to "further refine the player experience" in response to feedback, while expressing immense pride in their work. The game currently holds a Metascore of 77, with IGN's review giving it a 6/10. IGN noted: "Marvel's Wolverine's slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before its conclusion, so much so that even its strong character work can't quite save it from being anything more than okay."

In a social media post celebrating the game's launch this week, Insomniac stated it is "actively engaged" with players to gather feedback and promised changes. The full statement reads:

"It's finally here — the launch day for Marvel's Wolverine! We're grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this special moment. Players around the world are beginning their journey with Logan and we're excited to learn about everyone's experiences playing the game.

"We're incredibly proud of what the team has created. We're also actively engaged with our player community and gathering feedback to further refine the player experience.

"We deeply appreciate our players' passion, support, and time spent with Logan. We're raising our claws in tribute, and can't wait to hear about your own adventures playing Marvel's Wolverine."

The question now is: to what extent can Insomniac "further refine" the gameplay? Perhaps they plan to add depth to the combat, which has been a central point of criticism in reviews. Or maybe they intend to introduce more variety in the play spaces. Given the linearity of Marvel's Wolverine's gameplay and its tightly woven story, significant changes seem unlikely.

However, one aspect Insomniac might be considering is Wolverine's infamous "fart gas," which has become a source of online jokes in recent weeks. Some players have called for the ability to disable Logan's scent trail entirely, citing complaints about excessive handholding.

The debate was reignited after Marvel's Wolverine reviews were published last week, with The Washington Post journalist Gene Park dubbing the scent trail "fart gas" due to its appearance behind characters Logan follows.

There was some confusion online about whether this feature could be turned off via accessibility options. Insomniac's official list of accessibility options for Wolverine includes a "Chase Assist," which allows players to toggle reduced movement speed for targets during chase sequences, but it does not turn off the trail. Other navigation toggles also do not disable the scent trail.

This led some to believe the scent trail is always on, prompting calls for Insomniac to add an option to turn it off. However, ahead of Wolverine's release, Insomniac's director of community and marketing, James Stevenson, explained on social media that Logan's scent trail is integral to the mutant's powers.

"The scent trail isn't always on," he clarified. "It represents Logan's canon mutant super senses and elite tracking ability. It only is there when he's tracking a specific scent / sound (a person, whisky, or another clue scent) - story/mission moments or when he catches whiff of a collectible."

Referencing previous discourse about Final Fantasy's yellow paint guides, some have said Logan's scent trails remove any potential skill required for chase sequences and any joy of discovery in exploration. Could Insomniac be prepared to make changes to the way Wolverine's scent trail works?

The only other potential changes that wouldn't require a significant and costly rework of the game's foundations have to do with New Game Plus content. Wolverine has New Game Plus from day one, and Insomniac has insisted there's plenty for players to do once they've beaten the story. But maybe there's scope to add more activities or challenges for players to sink their claws into.
