Marathon Delays Major Update, Shifts Focus to PvE, Abandons Seasonal Content as Bungie Faces Challenges

Bungie's ongoing struggles are becoming increasingly apparent as Marathon undergoes significant changes, including a shift away from seasonal content, a new emphasis on PvE, and a substantial delay for its next update.

Bungie announced today that Marathon's next major update, originally scheduled for September 22, has been pushed back to December 8. This update will introduce permanent PvE content, a social hub with a firing range, an experimental TDM mode, and more. On October 6, a smaller update will reset progression and the in-game economy to pave the way for a major overhaul.

Bungie also stated that it is stepping away from traditional seasonal content updates to give the team more time to develop new content. The studio has taken note of player feedback calling for more depth, variety, and stronger progression systems, and is actively working to implement changes in response. Overall, it's clear that Bungie is making a concerted effort to salvage Marathon amid significant challenges.

Marathon failed to impress players when it launched earlier this year and has only declined further in recent months. To compound the issue, Bungie also ended support for its biggest game, Destiny 2, to focus more on Marathon. That decision was controversial, and so far, it doesn't appear to be paying off. Many players have already given up on Marathon, and Bungie's attempt to redefine the game by moving away from extraction mechanics is unlikely to win them back.

The next major update will arrive just a few weeks after Grand Theft Auto 6 and about two months after the release of Modern Warfare 4, which will feature its own expansive extraction mode called DMZ. The future of Bungie beyond Marathon updates remains uncertain, as the studio currently has nothing in full-scale active production. Hopes for Destiny 3 were dashed earlier this summer when Bungie laid off a significant number of developers who were working on Destiny 2.
