Arc System Works has clarified that Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls' Episode Mode, a story mode designed for casual players, will indeed feature gameplay despite earlier reports to the contrary. In an interview with Japanese outlet 4Gamer, producer Takeshi Yamanaka and director Kazuto 'Pachi' Sekine explained that the mode, presented as an interactive comic book, will include 4v4 battles woven into the narrative. Yamanaka stated, 'In Episode Mode, playable battles are incorporated throughout. Battles occur that tie into the story, while the design allows everyone to enjoy it casually, just like reading a comic book.' The mode offers around 10 hours of content, with story variations depending on which of the five default teams players choose. The plot culminates in a confrontation with new villains The Champion and his henchwoman Promoter, who threaten to destroy Earth. The comic book-style cutscenes are animated and voiced in 10 languages, utilizing the PS5 DualSense's haptic feedback. Players can also create custom teams in other modes, with a 'Team Generation' feature automatically naming teams based on character choices. Yamanaka noted that Marvel encouraged Arc System Works to apply its signature anime art style to the characters, with the theme 'from Japan to the world.' The developer had freedom in interpreting character guidelines, with Marvel providing final approval. Sekine hinted at interesting alternative costumes for fans to look forward to. The team emphasized that the game is accessible to both hardcore Marvel fans and newcomers, with Episode Mode including glossaries and character bios. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls launches on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 6, 2026.
