Marvel's Wolverine Off to Strong Start with 1.9 Million Sales, But Analyst Says It Won't Reach Spider-Man Heights

Sony hasn't officially revealed sales numbers for Marvel's Wolverine, but early estimates suggest the game has moved 1.9 million copies since its September 15 launch, generating approximately $130 million in revenue.

Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, shared on social media that about 22.9% of that revenue came from physical game sales—a notable detail given Sony's plan to stop producing PlayStation discs by 2028.

It's worth emphasizing that Sony has not made any official sales announcement for Marvel's Wolverine, despite having done so for other PlayStation Studios titles in the past. For instance, Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yotei launched on October 2, 2025, and sold 3.3 million units by November 2 (the 32-day mark), according to Sony's official figures.

Back on October 23, Sony announced that Insomniac's PlayStation 5 exclusive Spider-Man 2 sold over 2.5 million copies in just 24 hours, surpassing Santa Monica Studio's God of War Ragnarok to claim the top spot on the PlayStation day-one launch sales chart. At the time, it was the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever (a title now held by Helldivers 2).

If Alinea Analytics' estimates are accurate, Marvel's Wolverine is trailing behind Spider-Man 2. However, it has already surpassed the lifetime PS5 copies sold and revenue of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding 2, which made headlines when Sony dropped Kojima's Physint. According to Elliott, Marvel's Wolverine is already the top-performing new PlayStation Studios game released on PS5 this year, outpacing MLB The Show, Bungie's Marathon, Housemarque's Saros, and the fighting game Marvel Tōkon—all within just a few days of release.

The big question now is how well Wolverine will continue to sell. The game currently holds a 77 Metascore, with IGN's review giving it a 6/10. Our review said: "Marvel's Wolverine's slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before its conclusion, so much so that even its strong character work can't quite save it from being anything more than okay."

"So yes, Wolverine has sold well, but its commercial long tail is limited by its mixed media and streamer reception," Elliott explained. "Unlike Spider-Man, which reviewed insanely well and has stayed evergreen for years, this one's tail will be shorter and lumpier, but still there."

A sales bump could come when the MCU ramps up this December with the release of Avengers: Doomsday, which features the X-Men (though it's unclear if Hugh Jackman's Wolverine will appear). Wolverine might also benefit from the expanded PS5 install base that will inevitably grow with the release of GTA 6 in November. Plus, Wolverine is sure to be a popular choice under the Christmas tree.

"Wolverine will keep selling, just not at Spider-Man heights," Elliott added. "Spidey's been evergreen. Wolverine will be more ever-yellow."

Earlier this week, Insomniac said it was planning to "further refine the player experience" based on feedback. One aspect the studio may be addressing is Wolverine's infamous "fart gas," which has become the butt of online jokes in recent weeks. Some have called for Insomniac to add the ability to disable Logan's scent trail entirely amid complaints about handholding.

Meanwhile, players are testing the game's motorcycle sequence to see if Logan can die if you don't touch the controller. Another player managed to take Logan out of bounds, revealing new areas of the game.
