Vince Zampella, co-creator of Call of Duty and co-founder of Respawn Entertainment, tragically passed away in a car accident last December. He leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the key figures who shaped first-person shooters and transformed the video game industry forever.
This week marks the release of Modern Warfare 4, the latest installment in a series that Zampella helped launch nearly 20 years ago in 2007. His former studio, Infinity Ward, pays tribute to his contributions in the campaign's credits.
After completing the game's final mission, which occurs midway through the credits, Zampella's name appears first on screen, followed by others who sadly passed away during production. These include Rainer Yang, Matt Canale, and Preetam Raj Bordoloi, who also contributed to Call of Duty over the years.
Zampella was instrumental in turning Call of Duty into the megafranchise it is today. He initially left EA after leading design on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault to create the series, and later founded Respawn Entertainment, which developed the Titanfall and Star Wars Jedi games. However, he may always be best known for his work on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which remains one of the greatest FPS campaigns ever made and revolutionized online multiplayer shooters to this day.
His legacy is honored in Modern Warfare 4, and it's fitting that the game is one of the strongest entries in the series in years, with fans praising it and even Captain Price himself thanking them.
