'We Should Have Been Transparent About AI Use' — Crimson Desert Studio Initiates Full Asset Review After AI Art Slips Into Final Game

Pearl Abyss, the developer behind Crimson Desert, has announced a thorough audit of all in-game assets following an admission that it failed to disclose the use of AI-generated images in the recently released title. The open-world action game, which launched this week to high anticipation, quickly drew player attention to signs and paintings exhibiting clear AI-generated characteristics. IGN's Brendan Graeber identified additional examples with typical AI hallmarks.

This oversight placed Pearl Abyss in breach of Steam's AI Content policy, mandating disclosure of generative AI usage on store pages. Initially, Crimson Desert's Steam page lacked any such disclaimer, but one has since been added. In a statement, the Korean company expressed regret, stating the AI assets were 'unintentionally included in the final release' and apologizing for the lack of transparency. They are now scanning the entire game to locate and replace all AI-generated content via future patches.

This marks Pearl Abyss's second post-launch statement after Crimson Desert's massive debut, which saw 2 million copies sold in a single day. The first addressed player complaints about clunky controls, with an apology extended to keyboard and mouse users. On Steam, the game launched strongly with nearly 250,000 concurrent players but currently holds a 'mixed' review rating, largely due to control issues and performance problems like blurry visuals on PS5 and PC.

Pearl Abyss is under pressure to resolve these criticisms promptly to improve its Steam standing. IGN reported a nearly 30% stock price drop linked to critical reviews, followed by a further 9.78% decline yesterday. According to Korean media, the game's development spanned seven years with costs around 200 billion won (approximately $133 million).
