Viral social media posts and articles claiming a physical disc copy of GTA 6 is in development are incorrect. Various reports and social media accounts claimed that GTA 6 would launch on a disc by the end of this year after an image featuring comments from Rockstar Support went viral, garnering millions of views. The support email stated: “You will be able to acquire a physical copy during the following months.” While the email is genuine, it does not indicate a disc version is in the works.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the support email was a legitimate response to a ticket asking for a disc version of GTA 6, and while the wording was poor, it did not announce any policy change or confirm a disc release. THR said “a source with knowledge” of Rockstar’s GTA 6 launch strategy told it there are “no plans” for GTA 6 discs to be printed, “not at launch, and not months after.”
When Rockstar Support mentioned a “physical copy,” it referred to the physical version already announced — the one that contains only a code in the box. “The following months” simply means following preorders going live this week and related announcements, not months after GTA 6 launches in November.
Many have questioned Rockstar’s choice of wording — should a box with a code really be called a “physical version”? The bottom line is no disc is coming. So, if you want to play GTA 6, you’ll need to download it.
This week also saw headlines based on a Polish website report from an “insider” claiming a disc version of GTA 6 was due in December. While the report gave fans hope, it was also wrong.
Why has Rockstar decided against a disc version, risking angering core gamers? Analysts told IGN this week there are several reasons, all making commercial sense. Meanwhile, some retailers are refusing to sell GTA 6 because the physical version lacks a disc.
Yesterday, IGN reported on a poll asking if you’ll buy the $100 Ultimate Edition or the $80 Standard Edition. Surprisingly, over 70% of you intend to buy the more expensive version.
