Netflix Adapts Sega Classics: Live-Action Crazy Taxi, New Sonic Series, and Stranger Than Heaven Movie

Netflix has revealed plans to adapt three Sega games: a live-action comedy based on Crazy Taxi, a fresh Sonic animated series, and a live-action movie adaptation of RGG Studio's upcoming game Stranger Than Heaven.

The Crazy Taxi film is being billed as a 'live-action comedy,' while the Stranger Than Heaven adaptation is described as a 'live-action crime' story. The new Sonic animation is clearly aimed at younger viewers.

Crazy Taxi will be the first to hit screens. The script is penned by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writing team behind the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun. Producers Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara, who have worked on the Sonic movie franchise, are attached to produce.

"Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up," said Brandon Riegg, VP of Nonfiction and Transmedia at Netflix. "With Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and Stranger Than Heaven, we get to work across three completely different eras of Sega's catalog, celebrating everything fans love, while introducing them to new audiences."

Shuji Utsumi, President and COO of Sega, added: "We've watched Netflix take on stories across every kind of format and treat each one with real craft, and seeing that same dedication applied to Sonic, Crazy Taxi, and Stranger Than Heaven is something we at Sega are incredibly proud to be a part of. Toru Nakahara, Head Producer at Sega, teased that fans can expect "something cute yet cool" for Sonic, something "hilariously crazy" for Crazy Taxi, and a "badass action drama" for Stranger Than Heaven. Moritz and Ascher commented on Crazy Taxi: "This film is for anyone who's spent hours behind the wheel of a yellow cab on their Dreamcast, with the music cranked up, smashing through everything in sight just to make the next fare."

Netflix is heavily investing in video game adaptations, with numerous projects in development. These include a live-action Assassin's Creed series, a live-action Gears of War film, animated adaptations of Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering, and Clash of Clans, an Overcooked competition series, second seasons of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, and the third and final season of Devil May Cry. At BlizzCon 2026 over the weekend, Blizzard announced a Diablo animated series for Netflix, with discussions ongoing for Overwatch and Warcraft adaptations.
