A brand new installment in the Metro series is reportedly scheduled for unveiling this week during an upcoming Microsoft Xbox showcase that hasn't been officially announced yet.
NateTheHate, a leaker with a solid track record including accurate predictions for Nintendo Direct dates, shared on social media that the new game will be titled Metro 2039 and is set to be revealed at a Microsoft event on April 16. Details about the nature of Microsoft's show remain unclear, including whether it will feature announcements about first-party Xbox games. Additionally, there are unconfirmed rumors that Sony might host a State of Play showcase this week.
The news of a new Metro game isn't entirely unexpected, as developer 4A Games has previously mentioned working on it. However, the game's title and significant gameplay footage from an earlier version, which leaked over the weekend, are fresh revelations.
The Metro franchise, a subterranean survival-horror series based on Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky's post-apocalyptic novels, currently includes Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus. The VR title Metro Awakening was released in 2024. With Metro Exodus having launched in 2019, it has been six years since the last mainline entry in the series.
IGN's review of Metro Exodus awarded it an 8.5/10, praising it for bringing the survival horror to the surface while maintaining the series' signature tension.
