While exploring Crimson Desert last night, I spotted two unfamiliar blue markers on my map. Intrigued, I hurried to investigate and discovered they were NPCs from the Greymanes faction I had assigned to a farming improvement mission. Instead of just disappearing for a set duration, these characters were actively working the land right before my eyes, with visible progress happening in real-time according to the game's clock.
Pearl Abyss's open-world action adventure centers on protagonist Kliff's mission to rebuild the scattered Greymanes after a catastrophic early-game event. Players establish a base camp and gradually recruit companions who can be dispatched on various missions including construction, mining, and logging.
The remarkable aspect isn't just assigning tasks—it's that NPCs physically travel to work sites and perform their duties visibly. This mechanic reveals even deeper layers when I observed one worker promising to meet for drinks after their shift, and indeed appearing at the tavern that evening.
Crimson Desert features an extensive quest system with faction missions that sometimes require specific NPCs. If you send those characters on work assignments, they won't be available at camp, but you can visit their worksites to interact and continue quests, adding another dimension of realism to Kliff's journey.
The game doesn't explicitly explain these systems (though our Greymane camp management guide helps), leaving players to discover intricacies themselves. This organic discovery process has created exciting community moments as players uncover the depth of these mechanics.
One player noted that battle and recapture missions allow you to fight alongside dispatched NPCs—a feature I'm eager to try. Another shared their experience watching NPCs reconstruct a house damaged by a sky stone: "I could watch them construct the house step by step in stages. It was insane!"
Crimson Desert essentially contains a camp management simulation within the larger adventure. While necessary for story progression, players can engage with it at their preferred level. The management aspects quickly become substantial, encompassing NPC missions, camp upkeep, trade monitoring (including commodity values), and personal home furnishing—no wonder Kliff seems preoccupied running what amounts to a small settlement.
