PS5 System Update Enables Display Names, Introduces Trending Now and Top 10 Views, and More

Sony has rolled out a new system software update for the PlayStation 5, bringing several notable enhancements.

Version 26.06-14.00.00 enables Enhance PSSR Image Quality as a default setting. This feature, exclusive to the PS5 Pro, is applied even to games that support the older version of PSSR, "so you can enjoy a sharper and clearer visual experience," Sony explained in a blog post. You can disable it if you prefer.

Additionally, you can now see who's speaking during voice chats by enabling Display Names (instructions are in the patch notes below). You can even customize where the speaker indicator appears on your screen.

A particularly interesting addition: the update lets you view Trending Now and Top 10 through the Community Activity widget in your Welcome Hub. Trending Now showcases 10 multiplayer games or modes that are "surging in popularity," according to Sony. The idea seems to be to highlight new releases or games with major updates.

Top 10, on the other hand, lists the 10 most popular games in your country or region over the past week. This is data Sony typically doesn't share publicly, so it'll be intriguing to see what makes the cut. However, how the list is determined remains unclear. Is it based on total players during the period? Peak concurrents? Playtime? "Look here to see what games have a large community of players you can join," Sony said.

Not to be left out, the PS4 also received a system software update today, though the patch notes are less exciting. Version 14.00 improves "system software performance and stability." Thanks for the detailed notes, Sony.
