Onimusha: Way of the Sword Sells Over 1 Million in a Day; Capcom Teases Revival of Dormant Franchises

Capcom appears to have another hit on its hands, as Onimusha: Way of the Sword has sold over 1 million copies on its launch day. This milestone has pushed the total sales of the Onimusha series past 10 million units, coming two decades after the last new installment.

In a statement, Capcom attributed the success to pre-launch marketing efforts, including multiple demo releases and hands-on events, which helped build awareness among a wide audience. The company also hinted at its strategy to revive other dormant IPs from its extensive back catalog.

"In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently," the company said. "We are working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging our rich library of content, including this title."

This raises the question: which other series could get the Onimusha treatment? Fans have long clamored for a new Dino Crisis, and Capcom is often asked about it in interviews. Devil May Cry hasn't seen a new mainline game since 2019's Devil May Cry 5, but that franchise is arguably not as dormant as Onimusha was. Other popular choices include Ace Attorney, Viewtiful Joe, Breath of Fire, and Lost Planet. With such a vast library, the possibilities are endless.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword continues Capcom's impressive streak, following the strong sales of Pragmata, which has established itself as a potential new franchise. IGN awarded Onimusha: Way of the Sword a perfect 10/10, calling it "an incredible action game with an excellent story to match."

Capcom has been on a roll with hits like Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Dragon's Dogma. Upcoming releases include Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, Resident Evil Veronica, and Mega Man: Dual Override, all due next year. Further out is Okami 2, currently in development at Hideki Kamiya's new studio, Clovers.
