Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077. According to Deadline, the film will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for his work on the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises. CD Projekt Red is also attached as a producer, but no casting, writing, or directing details have been revealed yet. It remains uncertain whether the movie will directly adapt the 2020 game or tell a new story within the Cyberpunk universe, similar to Netflix's animated series Edgerunners.

If Paramount chooses a direct adaptation, it already has some star power to draw from. In the game, Keanu Reeves portrayed Johnny Silverhand, a radical, Tyler Durden-esque figure who resides in the protagonist's mind. Idris Elba also joined the cast in the Phantom Liberty expansion, which offers a compelling storyline that could be adapted—though it might not serve as the best entry point for mainstream audiences. Regardless, it's thrilling to know that Night City is headed to the big screen.

Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red is busy developing the next Cyberpunk game, which is expected to arrive after The Witcher 4. That means we likely won't see it until 2029 or 2030 at the earliest. But the timing could align perfectly, as a Cyberpunk film might not be ready until around then either. Reeves has already expressed interest in appearing in the next game, so perhaps he'd reprise his role as Johnny Silverhand on the big screen as well.

Paramount is aggressively pursuing major video game adaptations. The studio has Street Fighter hitting theaters next weekend, and in 2028, it will release a Call of Duty movie written by Taylor Sheridan and directed by Peter Berg. With its recent merger with Warner Bros., Paramount now has an even larger vault of IP to exploit, signaling a major strategic push into gaming-inspired entertainment.
