Path of Exile 2 is reshaping its endgame with a massive new update arriving later this month. Titled Return of the Ancients and launching on May 29, the update introduces over 50 hours of fresh endgame content, including a revamped challenge system, powerful unique items, expanded crafting options, and a completely redesigned Atlas Tree. Players can also look forward to two new Ascendancy classes—the Martial Artist and Spirit Walker—alongside improved campaign replayability, a new Build Planner, and numerous quality-of-life features to enhance the journey.

The update adds five new storylines and 15 formidable bosses, including four towering Pinnacle encounters. The endgame has been restructured so that all four leagues now feature unique narratives, dedicated crafting systems, and expanded mechanics. The Atlas Tree has undergone a significant redesign, allowing players to unlock every node by completing maps in the Fortress. Many nodes now offer meaningful multi-choice decisions, enabling players to tailor their endgame experience without constant respeccing.

Additionally, a new system called Masters of the Atlas introduces Ascendancy-style progression for the endgame. Players can align with different masters, such as Jado of the Order of the Djinn or monster hunter Hilda, each providing unique, asymmetric bonuses that can be swapped between maps at will, offering build-defining advantages.

Challenges are also making a return. Those who complete all eight challenges can earn the Knight of Aldur armor set, showcased through in-chat displays and a dedicated hideout statue. The update brings over 40 new weapons, jewelry, and armor pieces, along with quality-of-life improvements like navigational landmarks and trails in the campaign, a live-search Atlas map, and a native in-game Build Guide system for community creators.

"Uncover long-buried truths beneath a vast ancient fortress in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients, where a new era transforms the endgame and reshapes its very foundations," the team teases.

Crucially, Return of the Ancients is the final major content update before the full 1.0 release of Path of Exile 2. Developer Grinding Gear Games notes that they will continue to release balance and polish updates alongside event leagues during this period. More details on the full 1.0 launch, still planned for 2026, will be revealed at ExileCon later this year.

For the complete breakdown, head over to the official website. IGN's Path of Exile 2 review praised the game's redefined action and surprisingly fleshed-out endgame, awarding it a 'Great' 8.
