Since Crimson Desert launched, a common complaint has been the inability to create your own character. Players are stuck with Kliff, who has been criticized for lacking personality, along with two other underdeveloped playable options. Now, as with many aspects of Pearl Abyss's open-world action adventure, a mod has emerged to address this. The Character Creator - Female mod by Khione95 allows players to build custom female characters using the game's barber function, featuring 98 face presets and 159 hairstyles, with a male version expected soon.
With this mod, you can play as a custom female character using the female human preset. Most armors have been adjusted for female bodies, and future updates plan to add more customization options, races like orcs and goblins, and full female animations. It can be paired with Ev3n5taR's Kliff Female Voice mod, which uses AI to convert Kliff's dialogue into a female voice, though it's currently rough around the edges and likely to improve over time.
Reactions to the mod have been positive, with fans questioning why Pearl Abyss didn't incorporate the acclaimed character creator from Black Desert Online. One fan remarked, 'The story wasn't strong enough to justify skipping BDO's amazing character creator. I don't get it. Props to the modding community for stepping up.' Another added, 'I'm still beyond confused why they didn't go the Cyberpunk route—keep the story but let us edit the character. What's so hard about that?' Others expressed disappointment, noting that NPC interactions often refer to you generically, suggesting the game was designed for customizable characters, and criticizing Kliff's bland personality.
This disappointment ties into broader critiques of Crimson Desert's story. While some enjoy it as a sandbox, many find the plot and characters lacking. Pearl Abyss CEO Heo Jin-young acknowledged this, telling shareholders, 'I understand users' disappointment with the story. We could have done better, but we focused on gameplay, our strength.'
Last month, Alec Newman, the actor behind Kliff, revealed on Skill Up's Friends Per Second Podcast that the story and characters underwent significant changes during development. He worked on the game for five years, recording various iterations, and noted that early on, Crimson Desert was just a demo. It shifted from an MMORPG prequel to Black Desert Online to a single-player RPG, with narrative focus evolving over time. Newman mentioned that Kliff was originally named Macduff and that he pushed for more story depth, but moments of humor and emotion were limited.
The big question now is whether Pearl Abyss might add an official character creator. Given the game's setup and marketing, it seems unlikely, but the developers have been quick with updates since launch, so DLC could potentially offer this feature.
