Yoshinori Kitase, producer of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy and director of the original Final Fantasy VII, has expressed optimism about the potential for more Final Fantasy movie adaptations and hinted that Square Enix is likely interested in pursuing original IP in the future.

These days, it seems like every major video game developer is licensing their IP for TV and film adaptations. Many of these have been quite successful; Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie has become one of the most profitable horror films of all time, and the Sonic film franchise is so popular that a fourth movie is on the way.

One developer notably absent from this trend is Square Enix. While Final Fantasy games have had their share of adaptations over the years with mixed reception from fans (The Spirits Within is a good movie, dammit, and I’ll die on this hill), we haven’t seen one on the big screen in quite some time.

IGN’s Michael Peyton had the chance to speak with Yoshinori Kitase at the Lucca Comics & Games Festival 2026, where he asked about Square Enix’s plans for future movies. While Kitase couldn’t reveal much, his response was optimistic.

“Given the fact that we created this game, the remake of Final Fantasy VII, which explored the world of Final Fantasy VII way more than the original version, I think that it would be nice to have in the future games or TV series inspired by the story of Final Fantasy. And I don't see why that should not be a possibility in the future,” he answered.

Furthermore, Kitase also seemed to be under the impression that Square Enix is likely to pivot its focus toward more original stories and IP, following the massive effort that is the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.

“I think that mainly, we are more likely to invest in new titles and new games, but at the same time, for example, this time with the [Final Fantasy VII] remake, there was me and other creators who worked on the original game, which we had really strong feelings towards,” he said. “And we really wanted to create something new related to the old game to allow new users to play and to know the appeal of this game as much as the old users who play the old game. So there might be different cases like this one where the company is willing to invest in remaking old projects and other kinds of games like it happened this time.”

The third and final game in the Remake trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, releases on April 28, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
