GTA 6 Morality System Can 'Shatter', Making You Irredeemable for the Whole Playthrough

The morality meter in Grand Theft Auto 6 can reportedly 'shatter', leaving you essentially irredeemable for the entire game if you cause too much chaos.

YouTuber TGG had a behind-closed-doors preview of GTA 6 and shared a wealth of details. The game's 'criminal profile' system, which works similarly to the honor system in Red Dead Redemption, has been a hot topic. In a new video, TGG explained the different levels: Professional (the highest, most honorable), Aggressive, Violent, and the lowest, Psycho. There's also an unnamed state that begins to crack and eventually shatter if you go too far off the rails. Rockstar told TGG that reaching this state is very difficult, and it's partly for players who clearly don't care about the system—if the meter shatters, the game stops tracking your actions.

Rockstar aims to balance player freedom, so you don't have to engage with every system. If you want to kill everyone you see, you can do so without feeling punished. You can even turn off notifications about your criminal profile, allowing you to be blissfully unaware of how the game judges you.

The system measures the type of criminal you are, considering whether your actions are justified. For example, if you rob a store and someone shoots at you, killing them in self-defense won't hurt your profile. But if you gun down a helpless clerk or escalate a situation without cause, your meter slides toward the darker side.

Jason and Lucia each have their own independent profiles, so you can play them completely differently. It's unclear how much this affects the story or if it can change the ending like Red Dead Redemption 2's honor system. Given Rockstar's emphasis on player choice, it's hard to say if it will significantly impact the narrative.

GTA 6 also includes a relationship meter that tracks how in love Jason and Lucia are based on your actions. This has sparked some social media controversy, with players' spouses worried they'll pay more attention to their in-game partner than their real one. Take that as you will.

Overall, GTA 6 sounds like a rich roleplaying experience. It'll be interesting to see how deep these systems go, but it has the potential to be one of the most interactive and nuanced games of the generation.
