Sony is willing to pay $400 to customers who are ready to give up their PS5 and two controllers. As reported by ResetEra user Jay_Horror, PlayStation has been sending notifications to fans who have the PlayStation app on their phones. The notification informs users that they can trade in their console to Sony and receive money directly into their bank account. The offer is valued at up to $400 for anyone with a standard PS5 and two controllers. While trade-in programs are common among retailers like GameStop, especially during the holiday season, it's less usual for platform holders to reach out directly to customers like this.
This move might indicate that Sony is anticipating a hardware shortage or is interested in pre-owned stock to sell at a more affordable price than a brand-new unit. Currently, PlayStation 5 consoles cost between $600 and $650, depending on whether you choose the disc drive version. If you opt for the premium PS5 Pro, it will set you back $900. However, due to high demand for the Pro ahead of GTA 6's release, it has been difficult to find one at retail price. Consequently, resellers and even retailers like GameStop are selling used PS5 Pros for as much as $1,400.
If you purchased a PS5 before prices started to rise and no longer use it, this isn't a bad deal. Given that the console initially cost $500, getting $400 back (as long as you also acquired an extra controller at some point) is a solid trade-in value. At this stage in the PS4's life cycle, you wouldn't have come close to getting $400 back at a retailer like GameStop.
