Toys for Bob announced Spyro: A Realm Beyond at the Xbox Games Showcase with a short teaser trailer and a glimpse of gameplay. This marks the first original Spyro game in nearly 20 years, featuring the return of Tom Kenny as the voice of Spyro and a series first: 'true dragon flight.'
Spyro: A Realm Beyond is scheduled for spring 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The teaser trailer begins with a cinematic showing Spyro taking flight, followed by a title screen and 10 seconds of gameplay that demonstrates Spyro flying in-game rather than gliding.
Spyro has an updated look with larger wings to reflect his new abilities, as previous games only allowed gliding.
'We're trying to amplify what it means to be a dragon, and that means leaning into dragon flight,' said Lou Studdert, associate creative director at Toys for Bob. He explained that players can transition from ground to air instantly by pressing a button, without restrictions to specific areas. However, this doesn't mean players can bypass the environment entirely.
'One of the things we're showing off in the gameplay portion is, we want you interacting with the environment,' Studdert said. 'We want you diving down to catch speed, using your flame breath to ignite campfires to get lift before flapping your wings to sustain movement.'
Flight was the first focus of prototyping and drove the game's overall design.
'Some of the things that fans really enjoy about Spyro is just the movement,' said studio head Paul Yan. 'It's this Zen-like flow through the world, a sense of discovery and chaining your charge through the speed pads, collecting your gems. And so flight seems like a natural way to take that to the next level, literally.'
Toys for Bob has worked on several Spyro titles, including the Skylanders series and Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, the remake of the original three games. The spark for A Realm Beyond came while developing the Reignited Trilogy in 2018. The team acknowledges the original trilogy as the foundation for the character.
'The Reignited Trilogy is where we kind of found that tone, found that character and it really personified who Spyro is,' Studdert explained. 'We saw that really resonate with the fan base, and so for us, that'll always be an anchor.'
Yan noted that bringing back Tom Kenny as Spyro's voice indicates the studio's approach and the game's foundation. 'We're very excited to hear what the fan base thinks,' Yan said. 'Every year, they're very committed. There's Spyro community day and we're listening, and I'm just thrilled to be able to just say, Yes, we have been making this, we hear you, there's a new game.'
More details on Spyro: A Realm Beyond are expected soon ahead of its spring release. In the meantime, check out IGN's roundup of everything announced during Xbox Games Showcase 2026.
