Physical Media Advocates Urge PlayStation Boycott Next Month After Sony's Disc Phase-Out, but Will It Matter?

Supporters of physical game discs are calling on players to boycott PlayStation for a week in August, hoping to pressure Sony into reversing its plan to stop producing discs by 2028. The campaign, led by the 'Does it play?' X/Twitter account—a vocal critic of Sony's move—has garnered nearly 1 million views. 'Sony wants to abandon fans? Let's give them a small taste of their own medicine!' the account posted. 'Together with other creators we call for a 1 week #PSBlackout in August. No logins, no play sessions, no purchases on any of Sony's platforms.'

Sony justifies the shift by citing consumer trends toward digital media. 'As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028,' said Sid Shuman, Senior Director at Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications. He emphasized that this change only affects new games released after that date and aligns with how most players prefer to access games.

Industry data supports Sony's stance. Mat Piscatella of Circana noted that only seven PlayStation games sold over 100,000 physical units in the U.S. this year, with just two surpassing 10,000 units in a recent week. However, fans have rallied against the decision, signing petitions and flooding PlayStation social media with concerns about game preservation and ownership, even overshadowing new game announcements.

Critics include the UK's Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA), whose CEO Kim Bayley called the move 'a triumph of corporate convenience over consumer choice.' She noted that 25% of under-25s still use discs, valuing true ownership, sharing, and preservation. 'A disc can be shared with family, traded in, collected, preserved and, crucially, still played years from now. A download licence often offers none of those freedoms,' Bayley said.

The boycott, scheduled from August 23 to 30, urges players to avoid logging in, playing, or buying anything on Sony platforms. The organizers argue that Sony has become disconnected from its fanbase, citing studio closures, misguided live-service strategies, and neglect of beloved franchises. 'Ending physical discs in 2028 feels like the last straw,' they stated.

Despite the outcry, analysts doubt Sony will budge. Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games noted that even if 500,000 subscribers cancel PlayStation Plus, it's just 1% of that business. 'Digital is just too lucrative,' he said. Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere highlighted that digital purchases now account for nearly 80% of full game sales on PlayStation, up from 13% in 2013. Robin Zhu of Bernstein added that if physical media fans had bought more discs, Sony wouldn't see the digital sales ratios justifying this move.

Financially, going all-digital boosts Sony's margins. For first-party games sold physically, Sony keeps about 65% of revenue; digitally, it keeps 100%. For third-party titles, Sony gets a 30% cut from digital sales versus a 15% licensing fee from physical copies. With console sales declining due to rising costs, the shift maximizes profits.

While boycotts rarely change corporate decisions, the campaign hopes to send a message. However, with major games like Metal Gear Solid 4 releasing that week, participation may be limited. As Toto concluded, 'Sony knew what the online reaction would look like, and they now wait for this storm to pass.'
