Paramount has made a major move in the gaming industry, announcing its first big project: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, developed by Bayonetta studio PlatinumGames.

The newly formed Paramount Games Studio consolidates all Paramount and Skydance gaming studios, including Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media, as part of a push into the triple-A space. Alongside the Turtles game, Paramount Games Studio is now publishing the recently delayed Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game.

Revealed during the Summer Game Fest showcase, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is described as a "AAA action-adventure game" based on the hugely popular comic book series. The story follows the last surviving Ninja Turtle on a desperate mission for vengeance. It's early in development, but expect a release on consoles and PC.

If you're confused because a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin game was previously announced as in development at Embracer-owned Black Forest Games, that project is no more, Paramount confirmed to IGN. The Last Ronin was in development at Black Forest and publisher THQ Nordic, but development stopped before Skydance merged with Paramount in August last year. Paramount Games decided to continue development and chose PlatinumGames.

Ahead of today's announcement, IGN interviewed Shawn Kittelsen, senior vice president and head of creative and production at Paramount Games Studio, to learn more about the Turtles game and Paramount's ambitions. He compared the Turtles game's ambition to Nier: Automata, which Platinum also worked on, and hinted that fans of Paramount's vast franchise library can expect more major video games based on its properties.
