The Marathon Server Slam has kicked off with a bang, attracting a substantial player base on Steam. Bungie's extraction shooter became free to download on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S starting February 26, offering gamers a weekend trial. On Steam, Marathon reached a peak of 143,621 concurrent players, though the total across all platforms is likely higher, as Microsoft and Sony do not disclose such figures. While the event is free and the full game will launch at $39.99 next week, these numbers indicate strong initial interest.

For context, competitor Arc Raiders saw similar success with a pre-launch stress test, peaking at 189,668 concurrent players on Steam and later achieving significant sales. Marathon currently trails this mark, but its player count is expected to rise over the weekend as more people join in.

Bungie is actively collecting player feedback and plans to implement updates during the Server Slam, aiming to resolve issues before the official launch on March 5. In a social media post, the developer highlighted several bugs under repair, with particular attention to complaints about Marathon's user interface. Players have criticized the UI for unclear item icons and excessive visual clutter, making menu navigation challenging. Bungie responded, "We've heard your thoughts and want to hear more!" directing users to its Discord for further input. While major UI changes before launch seem unlikely, adjustments may follow soon after.

Additionally, Bungie addressed reports that player-versus-player (PvP) encounters are too infrequent. The team provided tips for those seeking more PvP action, noting that the Perimeter (Beginner) area has fewer Runners and suggesting players move to Perimeter and Dire Marsh for greater challenges. They also warned that the UESC enemies can quickly eliminate players, reducing PvP opportunities if not managed carefully.

The Marathon Server Slam concludes at 10am PT on March 2, with rewards available for participants who help test the servers.
