Destiny fans are not giving up on their calls for Destiny 3. Earlier this week, they spammed "#WeWantDestiny3" in PlayStation's State of Play chat alongside various Destiny-themed emotes. Now, Bungie enthusiasts are storming Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest with the same demands.
The outcry follows Bungie's announcement that it will end support for Destiny 2 after the game's final update in June. Although Destiny 2 is nearly a decade old, the ending felt abrupt, and it doesn't seem like it was meant to conclude this soon. Bungie noted that the final update will include content originally planned for future updates.
Bloomberg later reported that Destiny 3 is not in active development, with Bungie focusing its efforts on supporting Marathon. The studio is also expected to undergo "significant" layoffs, making it challenging to develop a new Destiny game. However, Bungie is reportedly interested in creating more Destiny games and will pitch projects set in the universe alongside other ventures. It remains to be seen what gets approved and what the future holds for Bungie.
Destiny fans are trying to rally support to show Bungie and PlayStation that Destiny 3 is worth pursuing. They plan to swarm Destiny 2's servers on June 9th, hoping to surpass the all-time peak player count of Marathon to demonstrate that Destiny should be Bungie's priority. Whether this will make a difference remains uncertain.
A new Destiny game would likely take at least 4 to 5 years to develop, if not longer, and cost hundreds of millions of dollars unless Bungie can scale down the project. It's hard to imagine Destiny 3 moving forward without major changes, but stranger things have happened in the gaming industry.
