Bungie reportedly considered relaunching Destiny as 'Destiny Infinity' before deciding to cease development on Destiny 2. According to Forbes, the studio began discussing the franchise's future after the Edge of Fate expansion underperformed last summer. The decision to end support was made earlier this year, following the lackluster performance of December's Star Wars crossover, Renegades, which failed to boost sales or player retention. Destiny Infinity would have marked a return to the one-big-expansion model, but the idea was scrapped due to high costs and risks, especially with ongoing support for Marathon. Destiny 3 was also considered but dismissed due to production costs. Notably, Marathon's performance was not the deciding factor. These revelations come a week after Bungie confirmed that Destiny 2 content updates will end on June 9, nearly nine years after launch. The game will remain playable. Destiny 1 launched in 2014 to commercial success but mixed reviews. Destiny 2 followed in 2017, but tensions with Activision led to a split in 2019. Bungie self-published thereafter but faced financial issues and layoffs. Sony acquired Bungie in 2022 for $3.6 billion, but the deal has underperformed, with a $765 million impairment loss reported. Marathon, which launched in March with a $250 million budget, has also failed to meet sales expectations. In response, disgruntled fans plan to 'crash the servers' on June 9 to demonstrate ongoing interest. A Reddit user, w1nds0r, urged players to return and surpass Marathon's all-time peak of 77,358 concurrent players, arguing it would prove Destiny's value. Marathon's daily peak now hovers around 10,000 players.
