PlayStation's highly anticipated State of Play event was inundated with demands for Destiny 3. During the show's opening, the official PlayStation Twitch chat was almost entirely dominated by cries for a new Destiny game, with viewers spamming Destiny-related emotes and the hashtag #WeWantDestiny3. The YouTube chat was somewhat quieter, but still had a vocal contingent calling for a new entry in the Bungie franchise. This came as a surprise, as PlayStation kicked off the event with an in-depth look at its most anticipated game of the year, Marvel's Wolverine. Yet, many viewers were more focused on demanding a new Destiny title.

The outcry follows news from nearly two weeks ago that Bungie would be winding down support for Destiny 2, shifting its focus entirely to Marathon while incubating new projects. Bloomberg also reported that Bungie was preparing for 'significant' layoffs and that Destiny 3 was not in active development. That report cast doubt on the possibility of Destiny 3 ever happening, given the high production costs. Marathon failed to meet expectations, and Destiny 2 has been declining over the past couple of years, meaning Sony may be hesitant to invest another $300+ million in a game that wouldn't release until the 2030s.

Unsurprisingly, Destiny fans have been in anguish since the news broke and are determined to change Bungie's and PlayStation's minds. They hope to surpass Marathon's all-time concurrent player count on June 9, when Destiny 2's final content update releases, to demonstrate the demand for new Destiny content. This would require at least 77,359 players to be playing Marathon simultaneously on Steam. Whether they can achieve this remains to be seen, but a notable spike in players would be impressive.

It seems unlikely that players will be able to push Bungie and PlayStation into making a third Destiny game, unless Bungie can create a smaller-scale spin-off that is cheaper and faster to produce. Bungie's future is unclear, but the studio is reportedly interested in telling more stories within the Destiny universe.
