If you were anywhere near Kickstarter a few months ago, you likely heard about The Official Cyberpunk Trading Card Game. Raising over $28 million and becoming the most-funded game on the platform, the TCG based on CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 is still evolving post-campaign.

Recently, WeirdCo announced significant updates that tweak terminology and introduce game-changing mechanics. Here's a breakdown of the changes:

Minor adjustments include renaming the first phase of a turn to "Main" phase and making the early turn structure more flexible. These changes feel natural, similar to Magic: The Gathering's untap, draw, play sequence.

The new Main phase allows players to sell a card for a resource, flip a Legend card, play cards, activate effects, or attack in any order. Previously, the order was rigid, forcing players to play cards before attacking and ending their turn. Now, players have more control, improving flow.

Mid-tier changes include increasing the win condition from six to seven "gig" dice, preventing players from turtling up defensively. The cost to flip a Legend card has been reduced from two Eddies to one, making it more viable. WeirdCo noted that during alpha testing, players could win without flipping multiple Legends, so they aim to make flipping Legends exciting.

The biggest change is that defending players can now react to attacks by assigning blockers, flipping a Legend (at the reduced cost), or using cards with the new "Quick" keyword. This adds battlefield tricks and makes attacking more unpredictable. While exciting, this is a major design shift that may require redesigning many cards.

As a backer, I'm aware that rules are subject to change, but this feels like a massive overhaul. I wonder if the game came to Kickstarter undercooked or if focus was elsewhere. WeirdCo is also hiring a Senior Game Designer, reinforcing the feeling that backers are guinea pigs.

Overall, these updates seem positive, and I'm eager to see how the Quick keyword and Legend cost reduction play out. With the Kickstarter funding, WeirdCo has the resources to polish the game. Now we wait for the final product.
